God Squad: Youth Mission Trip…Remembered
If you have driven cross-country you know that the experience creates a few stories. This August a group of 15 Sr. High students and 5 adults traveled by bus and van from Richfield to Buffalo, NY. They did a lot of work to help others (and had some fun in the process).
Half of the group worked Tuesday through Friday on a variety of service projects: painting at the Habitat for Humanity office, clothing and food bank work and neighborhood trash clean-up. The other half of the group worked on a Habitat for Humanity house where they were given the dirty, dusty and muscle-numbing work of tearing out plaster, lattice board and drywall to get the house down to its 2×4 frame so it could be refurbished.
Everyone worked very hard during the day and after much needed showers, we explored the city and surrounds of Buffalo. We went swimming in Lake Erie, ate the original buffalo wings, played waffle ball in the park, went to a minor league baseball game and experienced Niagara Falls. Evenings, we had Bible Study and worship time to close our day and center us on the reason we serve others; the love of God and the Gospel of Christ. After an intense three and a half days of work, we loaded up the vehicles to make the trip back home, stopping for fun along the way.
The first stop was Cedar Point Amusement Park in Ohio — we rode roller-coasters, ate, and had some time to unwind from our busy and physically taxing work. After sleeping in Perrysburg, OH, we continued to Chicago to have a bit of fun walking around the Navy Pier and downtown area. We ate some Chicago Style deep-dish pizza while sitting at tables underneath the”L” train; a truly Chicago experience. We slept at a church just outside Chicago, were treated to a wonderful breakfast, attended their outdoor worship service, and then drove back to Richfield.
The trip was a wonderful experience and we would like to thank all who helped make it a reality. Many of the students are now excited to volunteer their time with Habitat for Humanity in the Twin Cities thus connecting the service they did in Buffalo to the need they see in their communities and living out God’s call to serve neighbors both near and far.
Peace, Dan Nelson Associate Director of Youth and Family Ministry
Have a wonderful summer! You are loved!
